Discovery of Shark-Derived Antithrombotic and Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia, which afflict many people today, are considered a type of hypoxia and are major factors in the formation of blood clots. We have discovered a new prothrombotic agent from carp, sunfish, and sharks, the kings of the deep sea, which are active under hypoxic conditions. We patented a special bile alcohol derived from shark bile that is effective in thrombosis models when administered orally at a few mg/kg. This compound also lowered blood glucose levels in a diabetes model and inhibited the increase in the coagulation system that accompanied the deterioration of the diabetes model.
